If you’re about to play Terraforming Mars for the first or second time, and you found your way to my blog, my recommendation is thus: buy every card that has plant production on it, and play them as soon as you can. 5 victory points to the first player with three plant tiles and eight spare MCR to buy the Milestone. There’s also the Gardener Milestone to consider. So playing an ocean is worth 1 point, while a plant tile is on the average worth 2 to 3, and possibly more, if you’re good at placing them between your cities. One strength of Terraforming Mars is its strong story, a narrative that differs slightly with each play even though every game has the same ending requirements. (That said, Catan does have a larger claim to my tabletop nostalgia, and it will be a while before Terraforming Mars has seen more plays than Catan here.) Not only am I crazy for Terraforming Mars, it is my favorite game, having dethroned 7 Wonders and Splendor from their shared first place position to a shared second place, and my veneration of Terraforming Mars is so far above my current interest in Settlers of Catan that one might say that the one hexalogical game is in a very high orbit over the other. There have been many times that I hadn’t a thought of playing Terraforming Mars, only to be setting up the board five minutes later at the suggestion of my wife. We love Terraforming Mars so much that it’s hard to resist its allure even when we’re comfortably doing something else.
